LC-MS Group

The LC-MS research group dates back in 1989, after a two years experience of the group leader (Prof. Achille Cappiello), as post-doctoral associate at the Department of Chemistry of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA (USA) directed by Prof. Klaus Biemann. During this period of time, he expanded his experience in the field of mass spectrometry, and in particular in coupling µLC with MS and MS/MS in the analysis of protein and peptides.
The group has a wide experience in the determination of organic compounds, at trace-level concentration, in various samples of biological and environmental interest by GC-MS and LC-MS. However, a prominent part of the research is devoted to instrument design and development in the field of liquid chromatography and mass spectrometry. In particular, this research group has a long-standing expertise in coupling capillary- and nano-scale liquid chromatography with electron ionization mass spectrometry (EI/MS), and in developing new nano-HPLC columns and pumps.
The group can rely also on an atmospheric pressure ionization ion trap mass spectrometer equipped with an electrospray interface (ESI) for the analysis of polar compounds of high molecular weight.

In summary, scientific skills are focused on the following topics:
Design and development of analytical instrumentation in the field of mass spectrometry and nano-HPLC.
Development and application of LC-MS techniques and methods in a wide range of research fields.
Development and preparation of micro- and nano-HPLC columns.
Development of analytical methods for sampling, purification, and pre-concentration of analytes in complex matrices of environmental, biological, and pharmaceutical i
nterest.
