1954 - 1967                   Primary school and high school in Zürich and Bern (Switzerland)

1967 - 1974                   Medical studies and diploma as medical doctor at the University of Bern

1973 - 1974                   Thesis: "The ultrastructure of the normal human skeletal muscle. A morphometric analysis on untrained men, women and well-trained orienteers" This study was carried out at the Department of Anatomy of the University of Bern (Prof. E.R. Weibel) and the Swiss Federal School of Physical Education in Magglingen (Dr. med. H. Howald). The thesis won a first price of the Swiss Federal School of Physical Education in 1974

1974 - 1977                   Internship at the hospital of Burgdorf, Switzerland

1982 - 1983                   Honorary Research Fellow at the Department of Physiology of the University of Birmingham (UK), to gain expertise for the application of physiological techniques to assess functional variables of muscle performance.

1983 -                            Independent research position for the study of structural aspects of energy metabolism in heart and skeletal muscle at the Department of Anatomy, Bern.
