Learning Objectives

Inglese e Didattica CLIL per bambini (ICLILBA), is a one year course program in English and CLIL teaching methodology organized by the School of Languages and Literatures at the University of Urbino ‘Carlo Bo’ in collaboration with the School of Primary Education. This course is directed toward teachers and educators that now work, or plan to work, in preschool and primary school settings and that wish to begin or continue their studies of the English language while building their knowledge in the area of foreign language teaching methodology for young learners.

The Master’s is open to students with a minimal knowledge of English (absolute beginners or at level A1 according to the European Framework of Reference), proposes activities to practice the use of basic morphosyntactic, lexical, and pragmatic aspects of English. The materials used for language development also provide a ready-to-use resource for the classroom because they analyze stories (Puck’s Stories) specifically created for this purpose. These are appropriate for the targeted age group and have been tested in the classroom by teachers belonging to the LIReMar (Lingua Inglese in Rete nella regione Marche) group.

The course involves three approaches: one which is strictly linguistic (offering explanations of basic morphosyntax while stimulating motivation to deepen the participants’ knowledge of the language though the use of  the specific tools introduced), a second which is methodological (gradually presenting language teaching theory on which approaches, methods, and techniques are based), and lastly, pragmatic (providing age-appropriate materials tailored to the needs of young pupils and in keeping with the established theoretical guidelines). In addition, since this is an online course, it promotes information technology skills relative to the use of multimedia platforms in various areas of technology and teaching practices such as online forums, synchronous and asynchronous chats, wiki activities, and Skype video conferences. Greater proficiency with these technological tools will help participants to be more independent in continuing their preparation after completion of the course and will allow them to use Moodle or similar platforms to teach their pupils online.

The provision of the course on an e-learning platform will allow future teachers to explore resources and activities which could be applied with their own pupils in distance learning scenarios.

Furthermore, part of participants’ studies will be dedicated to the CLIL approach since this is the methodology used in story dramatization (FORMAT method).  Teachers, in fact, will promote language acquisition through an indirect teaching act targeted primarily to the execution of narrative formats.

The aim of the  course is to prepare teachers of English as a second language who can tangibly meet the current needs of pre and primary schools in Italy.

The extension of CLIL methodology to primary schools and the emphasis placed on learning English  from the first years of primary school involves a readaptation of the competencies of the teacher.

The profile of  the pre- and primary school teacher, as outlined by the Ministry of Education, demands adequate psycho-pedagogical preparation, gained from study and valuable experience acquired in the classroom,

and a knowledge of teaching methodologies specific to foreign languages along with a command of the foreign language itself and the most effective technological tools to teach it. This is the objective  of  offering the course on an  e-learning platform because it will allow future teachers to acquire skills that they themselves can later apply in e-learning activities.
