Learning Objectives

The final aim of the course is to link basic science with the fundamental pathogenetic and pathophysiological mechanisms underlying disease.

Program

1. Cell injury, cell death and adaptations; 2. Inflammation and repair; 3. Hemodynamic Disorders, Thromboembolism and Shock; 4. Diseases of the immune system; 5. Neoplasia; 6. Genetic Disorders; 7. Environmental and Nutritional Diseases 8. Blood vessels: structure and function of blood vessels; 9. Diabetes Mellitus.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

D1- KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING At the end of the course, to pass the exam the student has to demonstrate the acquisition of knowledge related to the causes of human diseases: cell/tissue damage and death; fundamental pathological mechanisms associated to immunity, inflammation and cancerogenesis; genetic pathology inheritance.

D2-APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING The students has to demonstrate the ability to recognize the most common underlying mechanisms of disease.

D3-MAKING JUDGEMENTS The student has to acquire knowledge to enable him to recognize the mechanisms responsible for the development of a disease and to identify specific pathological conditions with the possibility of application in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases.

D4-COMMUNICATION The student must have the ability to interact professionally and competently with doctors and with patients. The student has to acquire the capability to convey knowledge in a clear and understandable way and accessible to unqualified persons.

D5-LIFELONG LEARNING SKILLS The student has to be able to examine and understand scientific texts, so as to use them in everyday contexts for the profession and for research.

Assessment

Oral examination preceded by a written test. The written test will consist of a multiple choice test since it intends to assess the basic knowledge about the main mechanisms responsible for the development of diseases. The oral exam will be a deepening of the basic knowledge.
