Learning Objectives

The course aims to provide students with knowledge on the basic principles and techniques for the analysis of remote sensing images, both on land and in the planetary field. In addition, the course aims to provide the basic elements of knowledge for the acquisition, management and processing of data for analysis in the field of geological and geomorphological research.

1 - Introduction to remote sensing and basic principles

What is remote sensing - Definitions and basic principles of remote sensing

Description of a remote sensing system
The principles of the electromagnetic radiation
The electromagnetic spectrum used in remote sensing

spectral characteristics of the Earth's surface elements
Overview of the main remote sensing applications

2 - Acquisition and type of images tele-detected

Remote sensing systems: aerial and satellite platforms
Features of remote sensing satellites
Active and passive sensors
Resolution: spatial, temporal and spectral radiometric
Characteristics of the main satellites and sensors available: Landsat, the Satellite point, the IRS satellites, commercial satellites with very high resolution Ikonos II; Eros-A1; QuickBird-2; OrbView-3)
Airborne Laser (LIDAR)
Satellites and extra-terrestrial missions: Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, Mars Express, Messenger, Venus Express.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

At the end of the course students will have skills to conduct morfografiche and advanced morphometric analyzes of the territory.
Students will also gain experience and skills related to the interpretation of remotely sensed data from space missions with particular regard to the planet Mars.
