Learning Objectives

The aim of the course is the analysis of chemical processes in biological field by means of physico-chemical methods, in order to verify their feasibility and optimization and to study the properties and the troubleshooting which involve biomolecules their structure and interactions.

Program

PROCESSES AND REACTIVITY: Energies involved in biochemical processes  determining their feasibility and optimization. The thermodynamics in chemical processes and the need to define thermodynamic functions such as enthalpy, entropy and free energy or chemical potential and the principles that correlate with each other and with the system variables. State of balance and out of balance. Examples of processes in which these principles apply.Systems with single and multi-components, phase equilibria and phase diagrams. Solutions, standard biological balance of the apportionment; extraction and purification, surface tension, surfactants; adsorption.Reaction rate and chemical kinetics. Order and molecularity. Arrhenius equation. Transposed through biological membranes. Homogeneous and heterogeneous catalysis and enzyme action.Solid state structure and related properties.
PHYSICO-CHEMICAL METHODS: Principles of quantochemistry which are at the basis of the interaction of radiation with matter. Intermolecular forces, interactions and bonds, molecular recognition in biological systems. Spectroscopic techniques: atomic and molecular spectroscopy. Theoretical and experimental basis of UV-Vis, fluorescence, IR and RAMAN and MRIs.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

D1- KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING CAPACITY When the course is over, to pass the exam, students must demonstrate to have acquired the knowledge relating to chemical-physics basics, to the chemical-physical investigation techniques and evaluation of biochemical processes.
D2-CAPACITY 'TO APPLY KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING The student must show to understand the concepts and theories provided by the course; The student will have to provide examples of evaluation of simple processes that identify dynamic and interactions among biomolecules, using techniques such as UV-Vis, fluorescence, IR, Raman, and MRIs.
D3-JUDGEMENT AUTONOMY The student will have acquired knowledge to enable him to identify methodologies that allow to know the chemico-physical processes that involve  biomolecules.
D4-COMMUNICATION ABILITY The student will have the ability to relate professionally and competently with researchers working in the biochemical field. The student will have the ability to transmit the acquired knowledge in a clear and understandable way, also accessible to unqualified persons.
D5-LEARNING CAPACITY The student will be able to examine and understand scientific texts, in order to use them in everyday contexts for the profession and for research

Teaching Material

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it
