Learning Objectives

The course provides the students with an introductory knowledge on the philosophy of the social sciences and the main theoretical traditions of sociology. A first aim is to equip the students with a basic epistemological toolkit enabling them to understand the main paradigms and the proper language of sociological theory. A second aim is to make the students acquainted with different traditions in sociological theory, and with their corresponding leading authors, works, issues and explanatory logics .

Program

The first part of the course is dedicated to introducing the fundamentals of the philosophy of social science (basic concepts, the relation between epistemology and theory-building, method disputes and epistemological debates). The second part of the course presents the main currents in sociological theory (theories of rational choice, functionalism, evolutionary theories, conflict theories, symbolic interactionism, phenomenology).

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it
