Teaching in foreign languages
Course with optional materials in a foreign language English
This course is entirely taught in Italian. Study materials can be provided in the foreign language and the final exam can be taken in the foreign language.

Assigned to the Degree Course

Geology and Land-Use Planning (L-34 / L-21)
Curriculum: SCIENZE GEOLOGICHE
Date Time Classroom / Location
Date Time Classroom / Location

Learning Objectives

Interpretation of the petrogenetic processes of the igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, even with respect to their geodynamic environment. Classification of the rocks through the polarized light optycal microscope.

Program

The minerals of the magmatic rocks and the modal mineralogy composition. Modal classification and chemical compositions of the rocks. Chemical classification of the igneous rocks and the fundamental petrochemical concepts (saturation indexes). Normative composition of the igneous rocks. Magma generation: examples from the mantle and crust systems. Rising and fractional crystallization of the magmas. Magma assimilation. Magma mixing. The structures of the igneous rocks. Examples of magmatic systems with two and three components. Crystallization of magmas in the presence of eutectic and peritectic points. Magmatic series and geodynamic environment. Sedimentary processes and the sedimentary rocks. Terrigeneous siliciclastic rocks and their classification. Carbonate rocks and their classification. General framework of the metamorphic processes. The factors of the metamorphism: temperature, pressure, presence of fluid phases, deformation. The metamorphic reactions. The metamorphic transformations: two- and three-phase associations and relative ternary diagrams. Nomenclature of the metamorphic rocks. The metamorphic facies: mineral assemblages and reaction isogrades. Metamorphic facies and thermal gradients: series of metamorphic facies and P-T petrogenetic grids. Description and classification of rocks under the plane polarized light microscope. Fundamentals of optical mineralogy. Detection of the main rock-forming minerals of the igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic environment. Optical properties of feldspars and methods for determining the anorthite contents in the plagioclases. Microstructures and thin section classification of the most common igneous rocks. The QAPF classification diagram, the diagrams for the classification of the ultramafic rocks. The TAS chemical diagram for the classification of volcanic rocks.

Bridging Courses

No bridging courses.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

Understanding the petrogenetic significance of the magmatic, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. Aquiring the capacity of describing the rocks with an attitude to classifying them even with the polarized light optycal microscope, in particular those of magmatic environment. Making judgements on the field of the formation of the rocks with emphasis to the different geodynamic and regional framework.

Teaching Material

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Supporting Activities

Seminar activities and insights given by researchers of the University of Urbino or other universities or research centers will be provided.

Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment

Teaching

Lectures and practical exercises in the microscopy rooms. Geological fieldtrips in selected magmatic provinces of Italy.

Innovative teaching methods

Teaching activities will be implemented with single or group practical exercises in the microscopy room, addressed to the description and classification of the rocks under the polarized light optycal microscope. Geological fieldtrips will be also organized, aimed to the knowledge of some italian magmatic provinces.

Attendance

Attendance is suggested. The practical exercises are also comprised for the final knowledge.

Course books

Files of the lessons given to the students and available at Moodle › blended.uniurb.it

Suggested textbooks:

Bosellini A.,  Mutti E., Ricci Lucchi F. (1989) - Rocce e successioni sedimentarie UTET Ed., Torino

Assessment

Practical examination addressed to the description and classification of the magmatic rocks under the polarized light optycal microscope and oral examination structured to improve the knowledge of the students concerning fundamental concepts, technical procedures, command of the specific language, appropriate claim on the issues and challenges. The oral examination is evaluated in thirtieths.
