Learning Objectives
The course aims to provide the students with the basic knowledge about the essential components of the cell, cellular structure and function as well as the mechanisms of genetic transfer. At the end of the course, the student will have knowledge about cell organization, the dynamic interactions between molecules and cells as well as the principles of the cell functioning.
Program
Historical background of cell biology
Levels of living organization: prokaryotic cell and eukaryotic cell, virus, viroid and prions.
Chemistry of life: inorganic components, water and mineral. Biological macromolecules: carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids.
Gene expression: RNA transcription and RNA processing. Translation and the genetic code.
Cell membrane: structure and function. Membrane transit.
Endomembrane system: endoplasmic reticulum, ribosomes, Golgi apparatus, lysosomes. Vacuolar compartmentation: exocytosis and endocytosis.
Peroxisomes
Cell nucleus: Nuclear envelope, Nucleoplasm and nucleoskeleton, Nucleolus. Organization of chromatin: euchromatin and heterochromatin. Chromosomes.
Mitochondria and energy metabolism: mitochondria, glycolysis, fermentation and aerobic respiration.
Cytoskeleton: microfilaments, intermediate filaments, microtubules. Cilia and flagella.
Cell cycle: DNA replication. Mitosis. Cell cycle regulation.
Cells in their social context: stem cells, cell differentiation, development of multicellular organisms, tissues.
Bridging Courses
There are not prerequisites.
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
Knowledge and understanding
The student should demonstrate possession of basic knowledge about essential components of cell, sugars, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids. The student should also demonstrate understanding about cell organization and functioning.
Applying knowledge and understanding
The student must show applying knowledge and understanding to reason out, showing the ability to discuss and connect topics as well as analyze experiments of biology.
Making judgements
The student should demonstrate to critically examine the acquired knowledge and independently discuss questions and applied problems.
Communication skills
The student must show possession of communication skills with colleagues and superiors using the appropriate terminology.
Learning skills
The student must show possession of learning skills to update knowledge about this discipline.
Teaching Material
The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment
- Teaching
Frontal lessons
- Innovative teaching methods
Exercises using kahoot and the use of interactive videos using JoVE platform are planned.
- Course books
It is recommend a text for the study of Cell Biology to be chosen from the following ones:
N.A. Campbell, L. A. Urry, J.B. Reece. 2021. Biologia e genetica. Pearson.
G.M. Cooper. 2023. La cellula. Un approccio molecolare. Piccin.
J. Hardin, G.P. Bertoni, L.J. Kleinsmith. 2022. Becker. Il mondo della cellula. Pearson.
- Assessment
The assessment includes a written test with closed answers. This modality is intended to ascertain the possession of basic knowledge related to cell biology and the student's ability to reason and make connections.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
Additional Information for Non-Attending Students
- Teaching
Non-attending students are invited to contact the lecturer for information about the program. The slides of the lessons will be made available on-line (see Moodle platform) as well as scientific papers, videos and self-training exercises in JoVE platform.
