DIGITAL GEOLOGICAL MAPPING
Craco (Italy)

The project has started in the lab with the
implementation of themes useful for the definition of a cartographic base
(topographic maps, aerial photos, and available geological maps) and for the
activity of the field work (i.e. development of symbols for outcrops, dip
data, boundaries, faults, landslide types). Some special prompt have been
created ad hoc for data collection, inside some themes.
All data were located or mapped through a GPS, such as outcrops, boundaries,
faults. Together with the form filling, it was possible to store easily any
type of documents (e.g. digital pictures, video clips, notes, vocal notes or
sketches) linking them to an object or a geo-referenced point.

The field work took place in a section of well-exposed
outcrops of deformed Permian and Carboniferous sedimentary rocks at
Tynemouth on the coast of NE England, near to Newcastle.
During field mapping in the study area a large amount of data have been
obtained. The immediate thematic dressing of mapped objects, the right
dimension and the screen readability allowed us to collect, interpret and
interpolate all data directly in the field.

During field work we digitalize
and collect data of paths and points of interest for landscape, morphology,
geology, paleontology, etc. all along the routes.
When the survey is done, you have a rich data bank which can be used i.e. to
analyse type and state of paths, the system of signs etc. in
order to manage the existing routes-net in a precise and correct way.
The data obtained from survey and further analysis have been published
through
Web-GIS and printing of tourism maps. |

Map IT can be used in any sector in which GIS is used and, in particular,
fields which require the gathering of field data (e.g. geology, environment,
archeology, forestry, agriculture, path systems, land register,
infrastructure, civil protection, vulnerability assessments, etc.). |
