Learning Objectives

Aimed at first-year and all other university students, the seminars presented here seek to develop and strengthen the soft skills needed to better manage their university courses, above all effective communication. In particular, this training path includes a series of meetings focusing on the language of study, academic Italian, the writing and presentation of a thesis, and finally effective public speaking. The meetings dealing with academic Italian include a self-assessment test which will allow students to identify their strong and weak points in their educational knowledge. Once their skills have been assessed, students will then be guided in order to develop efficient study strategies such as:

  • note taking,
  • adopting reading strategies appropriate to the objectives of their studies,
  • organising the contents of a mind map, and finally d) using the most appropriate language register, given the communicative context.

While the meetings regarding academic Italian mainly concern receptive linguistic and communicative skills, the two seminars focusing on preparing a thesis are aimed at productive skills. The two seminars will guide undergraduates through the various stages involved in preparing a thesis, from writing to presenting it. In particular, useful information will be given regarding the choice of a topic, managing time, establishing the structure of the text and the referencing style, and finally, preparing the bibliography. In addition, students will be shown the communicative skills needed for their presentation but also useful ways of managing anxiety and a careful use of non-verbal language.

Finally, ways of communicating successfully will be further refined with aspects concerning the oral language in the last practical seminar through the analysis of effective strategies for public speaking.
