Learning Objectives
The course aims to make students acquire the knowledge of cartography as a language of geography and as an expressive way of spatial organization. Starting from the first graphic expressions of the space, declining the respective theoretical-practical processes, we will arrive at the practical use of GIS and GPS and their application in the geomorphological and geological field.
In the second part of the course, mainly carried out through exercises, the basic knowledge will be provided for a profitable use of the topographic map as a fundamental tool for reporting the geological and geomorphological data detected on the ground. The knowledge on the use of the GIS will be based mainly on various practical exercises on the computer with data provided in both vector and raster format.
Program
The course is structured in two parts, a theoretical and an applicative one.
The theoretical part provides:
o Space and its representation over time
o Objectives and purposes of spatial representation
o Elements of geodesy, cartography, topography and topology
o The WGS84 global datum and the geodetic datums used in Italy
o General information on cartographic representations
o The cartography produced by the main Italian cartographic entities
o Classification of maps
o Raster and Vector GIS based cartography
The practical part provides:
Reading and use of maps
Practical exercises on cartographic material of common use
Exercises on the use of geological mapping by GIS
Exercises on the use of geomorphological mapping by GIS
Exercises on 3D cartography, TIN and DEM elaborations, Altimetric Profiles.
3D cartography elaborations with views of Slope (slope map) and Aspect (slope exposure map)
Bridging Courses
Prerequisites are not foreseen
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
- the student must acquire a good ability to use the cartography and the dedicated software and be able to independently develop projects on the typology of the exercises performed in the classroom.
- the student must be able to realize a report in electronic format to communicate the results obtained from the development of the project.
- during the oral examination the student will have to explain, with appropriate language, the topics illustrated during the theoretical lessons or during the practical exercises.
Teaching Material
The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it
Supporting Activities
The materials for practical exercises will be provided during the course. The software will be available in the laboratories where the exercises will take place
Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment
- Teaching
Lectures and guided exercises
- Attendance
No particular obligations are imposed, even if the frequency of the lessons is highly recommended, especially that of practical exercises in the laboratory
- Course books
N. Dainelli, M. Spagnolo, F. Bonechi, A. Canessa - Cartografia numerica - Manuale pratico per l'utilizzo dei GIS. 372 pagine Formato: 17x24, Prima Edizione marzo 2008, Ristampa: giugno 2010 Dario Flaccovio Editore. ISBN 9788877587893
- Assessment
The exam is done through an oral interview during which we evaluate the knowledge and skills acquired on the cartography, geodesy, topography and topology transmitted with lectures, the course material or bibliography and with the student's personal study. 1 to 3 specific questions can be asked.
At least two applicative questions will be asked, which respectively concern the use of digital cartography in geological and geomorphological fields.
The student must achieve a sufficient level of preparation in both teaching units, and the overall assessment is formulated taking into account the level of knowledge and skills acquired by the student with regard to both theoretical and practical contents..
The dates, times and places of the exam tests are published on the University website. To register for the round use ESSE3.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
