Teaching in foreign languages
Course with optional materials in a foreign language English
This course is entirely taught in Italian. Study materials can be provided in the foreign language and the final exam can be taken in the foreign language.

Assigned to the Degree Course

Geology and Land-Use Planning (L-34 / L-21)
Curriculum: SCIENZE GEOLOGICHE
Date Time Classroom / Location
Date Time Classroom / Location

Learning Objectives

The course provides the knowledge necessary for the creation of geological maps, geological sections and for the drafting of reports and explanatory notes. During the course, the main basic techniques for geological surveying are illustrated and used and the knowledge bases for reading and interpreting geological maps are also provided. The knowledge acquired represents indispensable elements in the cultural baggage of the graduate in Geological Sciences.

Program

Introduction to the course - Purpose of Geological Survey - The geological map.

Reading and analysis of a geological map

Stratigraphy of the Umbria-Marche Succession

Stratigraphic and paleogeographic evolution of the Northern Apennines

Measurement of field data: Use of the geologist's compass - Orientation and measurement of planar surfaces and linear elements.

Geometry and reconstruction of geological bodies: Relationships between geological surfaces and topographic surfaces - Real thickness and apparent thickness - Representation of geological surfaces using contour lines (structural curves) - Determination on the map of the position and trace of geological surfaces through structural curves - Strike line method - Reconstruction of the line of intersection between planar surfaces - Main survey techniques - Representation of terrain data on maps- Elements of stratimetry - Stratigraphic sections - Reading and interpretation of geological maps - Relative dating of geological events (stratigraphic and tectonic) - Geological cross sections.

Recognition, on the field, of the units of the Umbro-Marche Succession.

Practical exercises and applications in the classroom and on the field and survey field at the end of the course.

Bridging Courses

The teachings of Paleontology and Petrography are preparatory. Additionally, students are advised to take the Geological Survey course after passing the Geology I and Geology II exams.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

Knowledge and understanding. The student must demonstrate knowledge of the topics relating to the teaching carried out, also in the context of its relationships with the other disciplines of Earth Sciences.

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding. The student must be able to correctly use the knowledge acquired by demonstrating the ability to acquire and process geological land data, and to read geological maps.

Autonomy of judgement. The student must show possession of the ability to reason, following the logic of the teaching and according to its contents. In particular, you must be able to plan a survey activity, create a geological map and have the ability to deduce useful information from geological cartography of different scales.

Communication skills. The student must show that they are able to describe the knowledge acquired in a clear manner, with scientific rigor and correct language.

Learning ability. The student must show the ability to develop an individual growth path by integrating the teaching material provided with in-depth material also defined on the basis of requests from the teacher.

Teaching Material

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Supporting Activities

There will be practical exercises and applications in the classroom and on the field organized and carried out by the teacher.

Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment

Teaching

Lectures, exercises and practical applications in the classroom and on the field, field survey at the end of the course with creation of a geological map and illustrative report.

Innovative teaching methods

Lectures in the classroom are integrated through individual and group exercises in the classroom and on the field.

Attendance

Frequency of at least 2/3 of the exercises, including the frequency of the geological survey field. Creation of the geological map relating to the survey field with illustrative report.

Course books

AA.VV., 2003 - Guida italiana alla classificazione e alla terminologia stratigrafica. Quaderni serie III, Volume 9, APAT Roma (In particolare, Capitoli 2, 5, 6, 8, 9).

CREMONINI G., 1994 - Rilevamento Geologico. Pitagora Editrice Bologna (Intero testo).

VENTURINI C., 2012 - Realizzare e leggere carte e sezioni geologiche. Dario Flaccovio Ed. (Intero testo).

Teaching material distributed by the teacher.

Assessment

The assessment of learning involves the creation and presentation by the student of an original geological report relating to the area of the survey field (complete with detailed geological map surveyed ex-novo), the execution of a geological section and an oral test on a minimum of three topics relating to the course program and on the papers (geological map etc.) produced by the student.
The tests provided were chosen as they allow the student's preparation to be ascertained in the best possible way. The aim is to evaluate the student's preparation on the theoretical concepts illustrated in class and on the knowledge of the technical-practical aspects of geological surveying. The oral test is evaluated with a mark out of thirty, also taking into account the various geological works created.
