Learning Objectives

The main aim of the course is to develop critical thinking abilities in the students. Specifically, becoming aware of the intricacies of correctly assessing information and how different pieces of this information are tied together, becoming better and more aware citizens, resistant to biases and trickery employed to convince of false information. Overall, the course is thought as a general tool to improve the literacy of European students and their ability to form proper and clear thoughts.

The course is divided into 3 parts:

  1. Textual analysis of a text (approximately 3 hours), aimed at learning how to analyse a text, identifying the major elements presented, the scope of the text, and how to properly reconstruct it in order to avoid rhetorical and useless information. The structure of part (1) is as follows: (1.1) Recognizing the elements of a text; (1.2) Identifying an argument and its aim; (1.3) Reconstructing an argument.

  2. Formal assessment of a text (approximately 7 hours), aimed at learning how to assess an informal/formal argument for validity and soundness, by identifying  the most common fallacies in reasoning and applying the knowledge acquired during the textual analysis. The structure of part (2) will be the following: (2.1) From an informal argument to a formal one, how to move from one to the other and how to tell them apart; (2.2) Basic formal logic, its connectives, quantifiers and their relationships; (2.3) What is a valid argument; (2.4) What is a sound argument; (2.5) Giving correct judgements.

  3. Practical applications of knowledge (approximately 2 hours), through the study of use cases taken from actual newspapers texts. The aim of such a practice is to get a clear understanding of the topics covered during the course.
