Arguments and problems of the pragmatic and the received views of scientific understanding
Programma
Abstract
Since many scholars in the last decades have renewed their attention to the notion of understanding in the broad area of epistemology and, in particular, of scientific understanding, in the domain of the general philosophy of sciences, it is now urgent to disentangle the rich debate and to point out the definition of the main emergent views. De Regt (2017) argues for a pragmatic view of scientific understanding (SU), proposing a definition of SU that goes apart from the received view. Khalifa (2017) submits instead a definition of SU that traces back to the received view, tied with the notions of knowledge and explanation. During the seminar, I will present the central arguments supporting the two views and the open problems supporting the main objections. To conclude, I will sketch a way out that promotes the strong tenets of the two views in order to develop a third alternative position.
