Unknown Nearby: Discrete Mechanical Materials in Multiscale (from powders to universe)
Programma
Synopsis
Discrete materials occupy a wide range of scales and, instead of universal behavior, demonstrate diversity in both physical properties, and in behavior.
Still, certain characteristics of theirs could be observed and described using universal methods. Several types of their particular behavior, like, for instance avalanches, oscillons, segregation, crystallization, and compaction, could be observed in differently scaled discrete (granular) materials.
Typical examples of granular matter include such diverse systems and materials as powders, sands, seeds, cracks, gravels, and even our Universe. Such systems are able to demonstrate particular (sometimes even extraordinary) behavior, which is not typical for the usual condensed matter.
At the same time, under special conditions, granular materials manifest properties typical for the classical aggregate states: gases, liquids and solids.
Because of this, granular materials could even be categorized as new type of matter of its own.
Knowledge of laws that regulate statics and dynamics of granular materials allow us to understand the origin of their behavior. This is an important task not only for fundamental sciences, but also for numerous applications in many industries and environmental sciences.
