Structural One Health in All Policies

Abstract dell'evento

This presentation is divided into three parts. In the first part, I will briefly outline the strengths and limitations of the “One Health” approach. Despite the obvious importance of its principles in addressing the climate crisis and amplifiers of pandemic risk, the effectiveness of this approach is limited by the impact of factors that lie beyond the health, zoonotic and environmental sectors. In the second part, I examine the relevance of “Health in All Policies”, an approach that recognizes that health is largely determined by policies outside the health sector and emphasizes that all sectors of government (not just the health sector) influence health. Of all the factors limiting the applicability of both “One Health” and “Health in All Policies”, the structural determinants of
health and the current model of global economic development are the most important.

Our anthropocentric approach to progress has been characterized by industrialized exploitation of natural and animal resources, driven by the drive to increase our power, lifespan, expectations,
comfort and material wealth. Unless radical, and yet realistic changes are implemented, the chances of avoiding new pandemics and ecological collapse are slim. The final part of the presentation proposes “(Structural) One Health in All Policies”, an alternative approach that seeks to optimize the interdependence of human, animal and ecosystem health in the context of their social, economic and political determinants.
