Learning Objectives
Themes
Photography, since its introduction in the field of art documentation, plays a primary role in the sharing and preservation of Cultural Heritage. The advent of digital technologies, coupled with the progressive diffusion of increasingly user-friendly and
affordable devices, has made it possible for various user categories (such as museum visitors, curators, or restorers) to capture shots potentially capable of conveying increasingly detailed information in terms of chromatic and morphological reproduction of artworks.
The adoption and qualitative evolution of images produced by smartphones, nowadays pervasive tools in both professional and leisure contexts, have further expanded the boundaries within which the photographic representation of artistic works can be explored. Based on the research and teaching experiences of the "Imaging for Humanities" laboratory at the Department of Humanistic Studies (DISTUM), the course will focus on various shooting techniques and smartphone-based solutions for the photographic reproduction of different objects belonging to the Cultural Heritage domain, ranging from ancient drawings to paintings, from physical museum objects to smaller architectural elements. Each technique presented during the sessions will delve into the different levels of iconicity that images encapsulate, targeting potential different end-users. Basic notions relevant to photography will be accompanied by the exposition of general techniques for the digital management of photographic formats and color. A thematic workshop (“Photographing in the Duchy”) will contribute to the
practical experimentation of what has been learned on a theoretical level.
The course will be structured as follows:
- Art photography: a general introduction, basic techniques and instrumentation (2 hours);
- Photographic documentation of materials and color management (2 hours);
- Workshop: Photographing in the Duchy (8 hours).
