Learning Objectives

The aim of the course is to deepen the theoretical aspects and practical solutions relating to the critical edition vulgar for which the stemmatic method (also called Lachmann's method) prove ineffective or unenforceable. The aim of this course is to make students aware that philological work does not coincide with the mere mechanical application of a method, but with the editor's ability to make choices motivated critically, varying from time to time depending on the text and the author at hand. At the end of the course the student has to achieve a proper knowledge of the main problems connected with texts that present complex traditions and not to be edited trhrough the Lachmann method. The argument, as indeed the discipline itself, is forming the basis for the curriculum of master of science in ancient and modern literatures (LM14-15) in order to gain a conscious approach to literary texts and to their correct exegesis.

In the first part of the course will be analysed and discussed the fundamentals of the stemmatic method, as a precondition to the topic of the course. 3. contamination

4. Diffraction and adiafora variant concept

5. the concept of "original"

7. The alternative to the stemmatic method: the method of Joseph Bédier and its limits

8. the limits of the stemmatic method in re:

  a. I cantari chivalric epic of the fifteenth century: the case of Spain in rhyme
