Learning Objectives
Understanding the geochemical evolution of the Solid and Fluid Earth.
Program
Origins of the elements and the solar system. The Big Bang and genesis of the universe. Stellar nucleosyntesis. Condensation and origins of the solar system. Planetary accretion. Meteorites and Chondritic Earth model.
Earth composition and distribution of the elements: composition of the Earth. Goldschmidt classification. Genesis of primordial Earth. Partition Coefficients. Transfer of elements from the Mantle to the Crust. Evolution of the composition of the Crust. Genesis and evolution of the Solid and Fluid Earth.Isotope geochemistry and absolute dating: isotopes and Chart of the nuclides. Radioactive decay and its mechanisms. Radioactive decay equation. Half-life. Geochronology basics. Rubidium-Strontium, Uranium-Thorium-Lead and Potassium-Argon systems. Closure temperatures. Radiocarbon method. Brief look at heavy isotope applications in petrogenesis. Stable light isotopes.
Geochemical compositions of magmas and geodynamic environments: middle ocean ridges, ocean islands, island volcanic arcs, active continental margins continental rifts.Brief look at solution chemistry: chemical equilibrium and Equilibrium constants, Keq, Solubility, pH, Ionization of weak acids and bases, Hydrolysis, Buffer solutions.
Chemical alteration of the rocks: mineral alteration series. Chemical alteration agents. Relationship between ionic potential and element solubility. Effects and quantitative aspects of alteration. Oxidation potential. Redox potentials. Eh and pH variation in nature. Oxidation processes.
Classification of waters and their properties: total dissolved solids, Hardness, Conductivity, COD, BOD. Colloids. Water Classification diagrams.
