Learning Objectives
The aim of the course is to offer a diachronic investigation of the role and importance of songs during the short Twentieth Century, with particular regard to contemporary Italian cultural history. Quite often, musical language becomes a meeting ground or a battleground between popular and high culture, interpreting and accompanying the nation's main social and economic changes, and generating a debate in which intellectuals and artists participate. Therefore, the evolution of song becomes key to explaining twentieth century's cultural processes.
Program
To follow the guidelines described above, we will analyse how the language of popular and ‘auteur' songs has played a primary role in the construction of a national culture in various historical moments: during wars and their aftermath, in the history of the Italian Republic, through the economic boom and student protests to the Eighties.
