Learning Objectives

The course aims to provide a general history  of Greek and Roman funerary wall paintings, from  the Archaic period to the Imperial age.

Program

Painting is a primary archaeological and historical-artistic source for the knowledge of the ancient world. Through a diachronic and significant selection of  Greek and Roman monumental contexts, introduced through outlines of relevant historical studies on the topic, will be discussed technical and material questions of ancient  wall paintings, iconographies and meanings of the theme, chronological proposals, social and artistic values of the monuments by considering them in their own historical and cultural horizon.

The student will acquire a personal knowledge of the methodological background of the discipline, the ability to analyze,  recognize and  contextualize monuments correctly, an  appropriate knowledge of the scientific language of the discipline.

Steingräber (pp. 94-142: Etruscan and Greek Tomb Painting in Italy, c. 700-400 BC); S.G. Miller (pp. 170-237: Hellenistic Painting in the Eastern Mediterranean, Mid-Fourth to Mid-First Century BC); A. Rouveret (pp. 238-287: Etruscan and Italic Tomb Painting, c. 400-200 BC)

During the course, specific readings will be suggested  in relation to the following publications, that are available in the archaeological sector of our library (Albani Palace, Via del Balestriere 2) and inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Assessment

The student, through an oral examination, must demonstrate acquisition of the methodological background of the discipline, the ability to analyze, recognize and contextualize the archaeological contexts and monuments correctly, the appropriate knowledge  of the scientific language concerning the discipline.
