Learning Objectives

The workshop aims to consolidate the students’ linguistic knowledge through the use of monologues in the primary school classroom. The monologue will be analysed as a piece of drama with the potential to be exploited in other media such as semi-monologues and dialogues. Through the monologues students can improve their grammar and lexical knowledge, as well as their pronunciation skills. The activities centred around the monologues will enable students to apply their knowledge of the language and re-apply the monologue medium in their own classroom contexts.

Program

Students will work on a series of monologues by the British artist  Joyce Grenfell which take place in a nursery school context. In each lesson a different monologue will be explored, with a focus on the language used.  Students will be expected to recite the monologues with correct pronunciation and then create their own monologues in a different setting. The final work will consist of two pieces: the first will be a written monologue produced by each student and the second will be a group task in which members will write and perform a semi-monologue. Students will be expected also to perform their individual monologues with attention to accurate pronunciation, good voice projection and appropriate intonation and word stress.

Teaching Material

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it
