Learning Objectives
The purpose of the course is to give the students a basic knowledge and the means for understanding the roles that microorganisms play in nature. Furthermore the aspects of the pathogenesis of infectious diseases are deepened
Program
1-Introduction to Microbiology. 2-The Reigns of organisms. 3-Morphology, structure and properties of Prokaryotes. Eubacteria - Archebacteria.3.1-Bacterial reproduction. 4-Fungi: Morphology and Reproduction. 5-Microbial growth: environmental factors affecting the microbial growth. 6- Notions on energy-yelding. 7-Microbial genetics: Organization of genetic material in Prokaryotes. 7.1Mutations and Mutagens. 7.2-Bacterial recombination: Conjugation, Transformation. 8-Responses of microorganisms to environmental stress: bacterial endospores; the viable but non culturable state in bacteria. 9- Quorum sensing; Microbial biofilm. 10-Notions of Microbial Taxonomy. 11-Microbial associations: Commensalism, Neutralism, Parasitism. 12-Pathogenesis of bacterial infections. 13-Notions on Immunology: Nonspecific host resistance; Specific immunity. 13.1-Serological texts. 14- Notions on antibacterial chemotherapy. 14.1- Antibiotic assay. 15- Principles of bacteriological diagnosis:
Laboratory: Students will perform the following experiences: Microscopic observation of microorganisms;-Techniques of isolation, cultivation and identification of microroganisms.
Bridging Courses
Students are recommended to have passed the General chemistry, Organic chemistry, Biochemistry examinations
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
D1- KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING. Students must acquire basic knowledge on the morphological and functional aspects of microorganisms, as well as on the factors that regulate their growth and metabolic activity and their interactions with higher organisms. They must also acquire skills for understanding etiopatogenic and diagnostic mechanisms of infections.
D2- APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING. Students will demonstrate understanding of the concepts acquired during the course and the ability to apply their knowledge to the different themes of Microbiology in healthcare. They must also be able to demonstrate ability to solve identification and diagnostic questions by choosing appropriate methods and laboratory procedures for microbiological analyses in the biomedical field.
D3- MAKING JUDGMENTS. Students must show that they have acquired skill in critical interpretation of the data and developed a conscious independent judgment on the most appropriate investigative methods and their compliance with the scientific method.
D4- COMMUNICATION SKILLS. Students will be able to communicate in written, oral or multi-media way the acquired knowledge and to know how to interface with interlocutors of their and other sectors, and to demonstrate ability to work in groups as well.
D5- LEARNING SKILLS. Students will be able to study independently and deepen their skill by means of consultation of library materials, databases and website information peculiar to the sector.
