This course is taught partially in Italian and partially in a foreign language. Study materials can be provided in the foreign language and the final exam can be taken in the foreign language.

This course has two main purposes: on the one hand, it is intended to analyse in a contrastive way (French-Italian) the main syntactic structures in French with a focus on difficulties that Italian students may have once translating from Italian to French; on the other hand, it is aimed at analysing the main phenomena characterising idioms and proverbs of Italy and France, in order to study their use in advertising.
1st part: Translation from Italian to French of basic sentences;
2nd part: Phraseology and Paremiology; Language of advertising.
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
Knowledge and understanding: recognising the most basic and problematic syntactic structures from a contrastive perspective (Italian-French); knowing and recognising idioms and proverbs; knowing and recognising basic linguistic procedures in advertising, with a special focus on idioms and proverbs used and modified in advertising.
Applying knowledge and understanding: acquiring automatisms for translating the most problematic syntactic structures forma a contrastive perspective (Italian-French); being able to use idioms and proverbs even in creative manners in order to achieve persuasive objectives.
Making judgements: reflecting on language from grammatical and contrastive points of view, but also in idiomatic and cultural ways. The student will have the necessary keys to carry out autonomously linguistic, grammatical and syntactic analyses, in order to use the language in a correct way for achieving different goals.
Communication skills: learning to communicate correctly in French, avoiding calques from Italian and using idioms in idiomatic, creative and correct ways. Learning to analyse linguistically advertising texts and to express one’s observations.
Learning skills: learning to develop strategies autonomously in order to express oneself correctly in a foreign language; learning the necessary techniques to go beyond linguistics barriers; learning to analyse a text focusing on different levels: on a syntactic – grammatical level and on a linguistic – cultural level.

Didactic material will be provided during the course and through the platform Moodle.
Didactics, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment
Lectures + practical class (translation of sentences from Italian to French, corrections and discussions).
Attendance is not compulsory, even if it is strictly recommended. The final exam will be the same for attending and non-attending students.

The exam will be oral and will consist of two different parts: translation of sentences from Italian to French; a discussion about the contents analysed during the course and studied autonomously by the students, following the references available on Moodle.

Non-attending students are kindly requested to find out (on Moodle) about the compulsory texts to be studied. They are also invited to meet the teacher to speak about the course.
Part of the course will be taught in French.
