Learning Objectives

The course aims to provide students with the basics of pharmacokinetic modeling, with particular reference to compartmental models.

Program

1. basic elements of calculus: functions and integrals

2. elements on differential equations and their resolution

3. basic concepts of pharmacokinetics

4. intravenous bolus model; model for intravenous infusion

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

D1 - Knowledge, and understanding. The student will have to learn the basic principles of pharmacokinetics. Above all, he will have to learn the mathematical techniques typical of pharmacokinetics that allow its use for practical purposes. These skills will be assessed through the oral exam.

D2 - Ability to apply knowledge and understanding. The student must be able to use the principles of pharmacokinetics to interpret the behavior of a drug in the patient's body. These skills will be assessed through the oral exam.

D3 - Autonomy of judgment. The student will have to be able to focus attention on the pharmacokinetic models to be used to solve a specific real problem or to interpret a collection of experimental data, that is, he will have to independently understand which pharmacokinetic model to use to solve a problem. These skills will be tested through the oral exam.

D4 - Communication skills. The student must be able to describe the principles and concepts learned during the course expressing themselves clearly, with appropriate terms, and with appropriate examples. This ability will be assessed during the oral exam.

D5 - Learning skills. The student must be able to construct his / her scientific growth path in a critical and autonomous way, being able to correctly use the study material provided by the teacher and the in-depth material that he himself can obtain. These skills, as far as possible, will be stimulated by the teacher by proposing insights; this ability will be assessed through the oral exam and possibly through the optional thesis.
