Learning Objectives

The course aims to provide students with the skills to understand the main microclimatic processes, the variables involved and the consequences on the artefacts.

At the end of the course the student will be able to understand what is a correct management of the microclimate of an environment containing works of art and what are the most dangerous conditions for the artefacts.

The electromagnetic spectrum, the characteristics of the main spectral bands and their interaction with the artefacts are also presented. The student will be able to understand the consequences of the delicate processes of interaction between electromagnetic radiation and works of art and will be able to critically approach the problem of lighting an artefact.

Program

The electromagnetic spectrum and the main spectral bands.

Black body theory. Main laws and applications.

Microclimatic variables. Temperature, absolute humidity, relative humidity, pressure, electromagnetic radiation.

Turbulence and laminarity: air circulation in closed environments. Atmospheric stability and instability.

Relative humidity and condensation processes. Condensation in micropores. Kelvin effect. Capillary rise and surface evaporation.

Aerosols. Particulate deposition processes.

Brownian deposition, thermophoresis, diffusiophoresis, Stefan deposition, electrophoresis, photophoresis, gravitational deposition, inertial impact and inertial interception.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

Knowledge and understanding:

the student must demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the issues proposed in the course, based on what they have learned in their school career and on the specific information provided in the course.

Ability to apply knowledge and understanding:

the student will have to demonstrate the ability to apply the acquired knowledge to case studies specifically referring to the problems of environmental management

Autonomy of judgment:

the student must be able to carry out independent investigations on the proposed topics

Communication skills:

the student must be able to present their knowledge clearly and comprehensively during a final dissertation

Learning ability:

the student must be able to process the information acquired during the course independently, also with appropriate in-depth analysis
