Learning Objectives

The course aims to reconstruct the phenomenon of Euroscepticism, from a historical perspective, therefore from the phase of European construction until today. As well as in relation to the new international framework relating to the Ukrainian crisis. In particular, the course identifies the factors that contribute to European integration and, at the same time, counter it. In terms of the economy and the market; in terms of politics and policies: internal and foreign. On the level of ambivalence between nation states and union.

Program

Il corso affronterà questi temi e queste prospettive attraverso approcci diversi. Rivolti, da un lato, all’analisi dei contesti e degli attori politici; dall’altro, all’indagine degli orientamenti e delle opinioni dei cittadini.

1. The evolution of representative democracy

2. People, populisms and populists

3. Leaders, parties, non-parties and anti-parties

4. Hyper-democracy and anti-politics

5. European construction and Euroscepticism

6. Euroscepticism, anti-Europeanism in public opinion and in the political class

7. Euroscepticism and the Ukrainian crisis

8. Analysis of the Italian case and of the main European cases

9. France, Spain, UK, Germany and the “new” Europeans
