Learning Objectives
Goals: main knowledge of (i) ore geology and industrial minerals; (ii) building stones as a natural resource; (iii) characterization of stone deterioration.
Program
(i) Ore geology and industrial minerals. Classification of ore deposits. The nature and morphology of the principal type of ore deposits. Ore-forming processes: orthomagmatic, pegmatitic, hydrothermal. Sedimentary ore deposits. Superficial and residual environments, supergene enrichments. Ore deposits of metamorphic origin. Non-renewable resources: fossil fuels. Principles of mineral prospecting and exploration.
(ii) Building and decorative stones. Commercial classification of stones. Physical and mechanical properties of rocks. Stones of historical interest. Confusion caused by commercial and historical names: the correct classification and provenance of the most used stones.
(iii) Petroarchaeometry and stone provenance. Weathering and deterioration of stones. Mechanical, chemical and biodeterioration processes.
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
The student have to demonstrate:
- knowledge of the principal metallogenic processes of ore formation and the classification of ore deposits; macroscopic characterization of ornamental stones and commercial parameters;
- knowledge and understanding of the relationships between geodynamic evolution of the earth and ore deposits formation; relationships between physico-mechanical features of ornamental stones and their use;
- ability to integrate knowledge and handle complexity for the identification of the ore deposits and their exploitation possibility; the correct use of ornamental stones;
- the learning skills allowing to continue to study in an independent way.
Teaching Material
The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it
Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment
- Teaching
Lectures and exercises with macroscopic lithic samples.
- Innovative teaching methods
- Attendance
The frequency of lessons is recommended.
The practical exercises are an integral part of the final preparation.
- Course books
Pdf Lectures of the Course available on the Blended-learning platform.

- Assessment
Oral examination is structured to improve the preparation of the student on the knoweldge of the principal metallogenic processes and their relation with geodynamic evolution of the earth; the knoweldge of nature, characterization and localization of the principal ore resources. Concerning the stone resources the student will demonstrate their knoweldge about the commercial parameters used for ornamental stones and their principal physico-mechanical features and their correct use. The oral examination is evaluated in thirtieths taking into account also the scientific and appropriate languages used.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
Additional Information for Non-Attending Students
- Attendance
