Learning Objectives

The Course aims to provide the necessary knowledge and skills to consciously apply the language of drawing, aimed at recording and communicating the morphology and conservation status of artistic artefacts (paintings on canvas, wooden artefacts and contemporary works).

The course addresses the issue of documentation for cultural heritage, with particular reference to the methodology and the use of digital tools for documentation and cataloguing in the conservation and restoration of cultural heritage.

The objectives of the course are:

- to provvide a basic knowledge of the historical and scientific fundamentals of the codified methods of graphic representation, allowing to document the geometric and compositional structure of the artwork;

- to provide the theoretical and operational tools to represent a work of art through a conventional language.

The representation techniques used range from traditional freehand drawing and technical drawing techniques to digital ones supported by specific software, with particular reference to the documentation of restoration sites.

Ability to analyse the graphic structure of the work of figurative art and to recognise its conformation geometric of the artefact in relation to its temporal location, ability to document with digital tools artistic artefacts through different methods and techniques of graphic representation, ability to identify and reconstruct the methods of representation applied in historical iconographies.

Ability to document the steps of the knowledge activities of one work in function of the next one intervention.

Teaching Material

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment

Teaching

The course is divided into a series of frontal lessons concerning the framework of the discipline and application examples. In addition to the lessons, there will be two practical exercises to develop the analysis, interpretation and representation of the artefacts under investigation, to be held partly during the lessons, assisted by the teacher, and partly at home.

The tables drawn up during the course will be corrected and commented on, in the classroom and during reviews agreed with the teacher, and will constitute the final file that each student must submit on the day of the exam and will be part of the final evaluation.

Attendance

Recommended lesson frequency: please contact the teacher to agree on the exercises and study materials.

The practical exercises are an integral part of the final preparation and must therefore be completed in all their parts (even for students who are not attending).

Assessment

The final examination consists of:

- an interview on the topics included in the syllabus with a question for each topic that will be graded in 30ths for each question (18-22 for sufficient answers; 23-27 for discrete answers with some shortcomings in the ownership of the topic; 28-30 for good answers that demonstrate ownership of the topic and technical language)

- oral presentation of the graphical dossier, including the exercises carried out during the course. The paper must present graphic coherence and correct graphic language according to the conventions. It will be part of the final evaluation (evaluated in 30ths according to the criteria of completeness of the exercise, correct execution, correct presentation).
