This course is entirely taught in Italian. Study materials can be provided in the foreign language and the final exam can be taken in the foreign language.

Assigned to the Degree Course

Medical Biotechnologies for diagnostics and therapy (LM-9)
Curriculum: BIOTECNOLOGIE PER LA DIAGNOSTICA MOLECOLARE

Learning Objectives

The master's degree course is aimed at training specialists who have a solid basic and applicative scientific preparation in the biomolecular and biosanitary fields, taking into account the requirements for access to the profession of Biologist. in particular, the course is aimed at training professionals:

a) experts in areas related to basic and applied research related to the hematological field;

b) it is also aimed at transmitting useful information to autonomously deal with the cytometric diagnostics of the main hematological pictures routinely found in the Clinical Pathology laboratory, and to provide general information on the possibilities and limitations of the method.

Program

Review of the structure and operation of flow cytometers.

Review of the production of monoclonal antibodies and their main uses in laboratory diagnostics.

Relations between the cytometry laboratory and the hematology laboratory, with hints on the blood count

Review of the elaboration of the CD system and the role of the main CD antigens in the identification of cell populations of the lympho-hematopoietic system.

Fundamentals of analysis of cytometric data

Theoretical development of the following points with computer-guided interpretation of cases related to the topic:

1) "Lymphocyte typing"; execution, indications and meaning

2)    Reactive lymphocytosis and neoplastic lymphocytosis

3)    Notes on the classification and diagnosis of acute leukaemias

4)    Role of the cytometry laboratory in autologous bone marrow transplantation

5)    Basophil degranulation test (BAT), and its place in allergy diagnostics

6)    Cytometric analysis of the broncho-alveolar lavage fluid (BALF)

7)    Cytometric diagnosis of paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria

Bridging Courses

Although numerous references to the topics listed below are made during the Course, it is desirable that the participants possess elementary notions on cytometric techniques and on the main antigens of the CD system (Cluster of Differentiation - their nature, function, and distribution within the emo- lymphopoietic)-

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

Knowledge and understanding. The student will have to demonstrate knowledge of the topics indicated in the program, and be able to understand the relationships between the various information relating to them.

Applied knowledge and understanding. The student will have to demonstrate that he has the ability to interpret the data in his possession in order to arrive at the classification of the diagnostic problem.

Judgment autonomy. The student will have to demonstrate that he is able to process the data in his possession to independently arrive at a motivated solution to the diagnostic problem

Communication skills. The student must be able to clearly and consistently communicate the diagnostic procedure followed, and the relevance of the final result.

Ability to learn. The student will have to demonstrate that he is able to coordinate the information received progressively during the course, inserting it with consequentiality and logic in the general outline of the discipline.

Teaching Material

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Supporting Activities

Students who have registered the disability certification or the DSA certification at the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can ask to use concept maps (for keywords) during the exam.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam session, to the teacher of the course, who will verify their consistency with the indications of the university guidelines and may request modifications.

Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment

Teaching

Lectures and practical exercises on the computer with simulated diagnoses of exemplary cases.

Innovative teaching methods

The course includes:

oral presentations (group work) of case studies
participatory lessons in which the works presented will be discussed

Attendance

Mandatory attendance

Course books

The study text consists of the material provided by the teacher and accessible on the Moodle Blended platform and the text entitled "Flow cytometry" Ortolani et al. Ed. Edi Ermes and from the text entitled "Flow Cytometry of Hematological Malignancies" by Ortolani Ed. Wiley.
For the Cytometric Laboratory part, equipped rooms will be used and files will be analyzed with the Kaluza Software

Assessment

Final exam consisting in the guided analysis of a typical case.

An intermediate test (Test) of Cytometry (Basics of Diagnostic Cytometry) is foreseen which will be averaged with the subsequent final exam (those who do not pass the test or do not participate will bring all the matter to the oral possibly in two separate sessions.

The evaluation is expressed out of thirty (minimum mark 18) consisting of the average of the marks obtained in the various tests and oral exams.
