Learning Objectives
The course aims to introduce students to the exploration of the origin and evolution of Chinese writing, intending also to provide them with the useful tools and methodology for discovering, interpreting and analyzing classical Chinese texts, official documents and other primary sources so that they can derive information about past Chinese history, politics and society.
Program
In particular, the following topics will be addressed:
- Invention of Chinese writing in the legendary period
- Written evidence
- Evolution of Chinese language and writing through the centuries
- Invention of paper and printing
- Principles of Chinese calligraphy
- Analysis of classical Chinese literary genres
- Translation and Interpretation of Classical Texts- Analysis of cultural influences on text production
- Historical and Cultural Contextualization
Bridging Courses
It is recommended that you have already taken the Chinese language exams scheduled for the first year.
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
Knowledge and understanding (knowledge and understanding): know and understand the history and evolution of the Chinese language and the fundamentals of classical Chinese language grammar.
Applied knowledge and understanding (applying knowledge and understanding): applying acquired knowledge and understanding by producing and supporting arguments regarding the subject of study.
Autonomy of judgment (making judgements): making hypotheses and determining independent judgments about the evolutionary path of Chinese and the meaning of written production in classical Chinese.
Communication skills (communication skills): communicate clearly and in the language peculiar to the discipline the knowledge acquired.
Learning skills (learning abilities): to be able to deal independently with texts in the classical Chinese language and recognize their influences on modern Chinese.

A basic knowledge of modern Chinese is required

- Assessment
Learning outcomes will be ascertained through a written test and assessed on the basis of mastery of knowledge of the texts for the test.
In particular, the following skills will be assessed:
- translation skills
- analysis and commentary of the main syntactic and grammatical aspects of the text
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
