Learning Objectives
The goal of this course is to consolidate and develop the student’s knowledge of the English language. The course will begin by examining the changed role of the English language in today's globalised world and apply critical thinking as to the cultures associated therewith. The focus is on topics central to the students' degree course, such as identity, European and world cultures, key concepts of sociology and social services and diverse global issues.
Program
In the first lesson of each week a theme will be introduced which will be continued in the second lesson; in the third lesson the focus will be on a language point. Preparation will be given for the next lesson or week, usually in the form of a reading or listening.

By the end of this course, the student will:
be able to discuss the role of English in the world
be able to discuss the social implications of English as a global language
be able to talk about him/herself and his/ her relationship with English
be able to formulate questions correctly
be able to express ideas and present and discuss
be able to critically discuss key concepts of sociology and social services, such as identity, English in the world today, European and world cultures, and key global issues
Teaching Material
The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it
Supporting Activities
Students will be expected to carry out autonomous learning using tools such as online dictionaries for vocabulary expansion, pronunciation, and contextual information.

- Attendance
Attendance is strongly recommended, as the final assessment will be based on topics and language from the lessons and will include a presentation and discussion, activities which can only satisfactorily be practised in the classroom with peers.
- Course books
All material necessary will be available to students on Blended Learning.
- Assessment
The final assessment will be a written test based on a reading or listening and an oral presentation and discussion of a topic of the student’s choice to be agreed on with the teacher.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
Additional Information for Non-Attending Students

Non-attending students are required to follow the course on Blended Learning.
