Learning Objectives

The course aims to guide students in the in-depth study of Chinese literature, from the works of the Qing dynasty to modern and contemporary China. Particular attention will be paid to the connection between historical events, cultural contexts, and philosophical visions. Through the analysis of selected works, students will acquire advanced skills in reading and translating texts in Chinese, as well as developing critical and interpretative abilities. Additionally, the course will explore how social and historical contexts influence literary production and content, delving into the relationship between historical events and literary production for a more comprehensive and contextualized understanding of the works studied.

Knowledge and Understanding: Acquire an in-depth understanding of the historical and evolutionary path of Chinese literature, including key periods, authors, and literary movements.
Applying Knowledge and Understanding: Apply the knowledge and skills acquired to produce and support informed arguments regarding the texts and phenomena studied, demonstrating analytical and critical interpretation skills.
Making Judgments: Formulate hypotheses and make independent judgments on the historical development of Chinese literature, based on critical analysis of the texts and their historical and cultural contexts.

Teaching

The course includes interactive lectures and lab sessions dedicated to translation, offering students an integrated practical and theoretical experience.

Attendance

A basic knowledge of modern Chinese is required to participate effectively in the course.

Course books

Mandatory Materials:

• Handout containing translated Chinese texts.
• Two novels in translation by 20th-century and contemporary Chinese authors, to be read and analyzed.

Assessment

The exam will consist of an oral interview structured into two main parts:
First Part: 4-5 questions will be asked to verify the acquisition of theoretical knowledge, including the history of Chinese literature and the related historical-cultural context covered during the course.
Second Part: Students will be required to read, translate, and comment on some of the texts presented during the course, demonstrating skills in critical analysis and interpretation.
Additionally, active participation in lessons will be considered and will contribute to the overall evaluation.

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
