Learning Objectives

Nowadays the Child Observation is applied in different professional contexts and proves to be a crucial technique especially for those who work in the development field. In particular, the observation of the caregiver-child relationship favors the detailed knowledge of infantile dynamics, allowing the integration of what is precocious in the child - detectable with observation - and what remains implicit - which instead emerges through analysis ( Winnicott, 1941).
The method of Child Observation consists in specific techniques for collecting materials and for processing, detecting and interpreting them: the observer, involved in the relationship with the child, properly trained, learns to keep his or her attention fluctuating, recording in memory the details of some significant moments and monitoring their own emotional experiences and then sharing these experiences with other observers (Zaphiriou Woods & Pretorius, 2016)
The aim of this Summer School is to provide the participant, through study, discussion, practical experimentation and seminars conducted by professionals and psychoanalysts, the fundamental skills to realize an effective interpretative work about the clinical and dynamic aspects of the observative materials.
The summer school teaches the intentional use of Child Observation, based on psychoanalytic discoveries, offering the possibility of a space for reflection for observers’ affects, detected during the casework and discussion sessions. Will also be prefigured Intervention lines that take into account the emotional involvement in the various professional contexts. The examination of the affects will contribute to the development of an interpretative prudence, allowing participants to learn to avoid errors, misunderstandings and oversights related to the over-evaluation of sensory "impressions", to the predominance of emotional reactions that can develop at the moment of impact with the observed situation or to the prejudicial beliefs that adults bring into play in the relationship with children even in an unintentional way.
The training will alternate moments of theoretical study with moments of discussion and casework in order to favor the re-elaboration of the experience through small-group-work. Participants will be invited to present observative materials in order to practice the theoretical contents and practical techniques presented step by step during the training days.
