Themes
This PhD program meets the requirements of innovative, international, and interdisciplinary doctorates and is divided into four thematic areas, in which doctoral candidates will have the opportunity to conduct research within nationally and internationally significant projects:
- CHEMISTRY - covering the area of Chemical Sciences, ERC sectors PE4, PE5, and LS7
- EARTH SCIENCES - covering the area of Earth Sciences and Biological Sciences, ERC sectors PE10 and LS8
- INFORMATICS AND MATHEMATICS - covering the areas of Mathematical and Computer Sciences, Industrial and Information Engineering, ERC sectors PE1 and PE6
- PHYSICS AND ITS FOUNDATIONS - covering the areas of Physical Sciences, Historical and Philosophical Sciences, ERC sectors PE2 and PE9 SH4
The PhD Program in Research Methods in Science and Technology adheres to the objectives of the PNRR (National Recovery and Resilience Plan) on all levels, most notably:
- in the very nature of the PhD program, which falls within innovative, international, and interdisciplinary doctorates;
- in the overarching goal to provide the knowledge and skills necessary to conduct scientific and technological research with full awareness, responsibility, and methodology, which drives development and innovation;
- in the scientific-disciplinary sectors represented by the members of the academic board, which include computer science and information systems (fundamental for digital transformation), ecology and geology (fundamental for ecological transition), chemistry and physics (fundamental for innovation), mathematics, and philosophy of science (fundamental for cross-disciplinary methodological models and tools);
- in its educational activities, which offer interdisciplinary methodological tools with opportunities for in-depth study and application in four areas: Earth Sciences, Chemistry, Informatics and Mathematics, Physics, and Philosophy of Science.

Objectives
The PhD program is designed to provide students with knowledge, competences, and skills needed to undertake research in science and technology with awareness, responsibility and method. To this purpose, the degree program provides the opportunity to: deepen ethical and methodological issues, develop critical sense, apply both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies, experience the development, characterization, validation and usage of formal and computational models, improve scientific and technical writing skills, and confront the international scientific community.
Contents and structure of the course / Syllabus
Activities of PhD Students
The first year will be dedicated to courses, exams and other teaching and research activities in Urbino, in the context of the Renaissance city, included in the UNESCO World Heritage.
Courses with exams will be taught in English. Exams (written tests and/or papers and/or oral examinations) will be taken right after each course. An additional session of exams is offered in september. Admission to the second year will depend on students’ achievement of a satisfactory score at final exams in each teaching module.
Seminars (with no exams) will address specific topics to provide additional opportunities of either deepening their main fields of interest or widening their research horizons.
Research projects are assigned at the beginning of the second year, which is mainly devoted to research.
PhD thesis will be completed during the third year, submitted and defended at the end of the last Academic Year.
Candidates are expected to spend a semester abroad.
Information about final examination
Course structure and research training
First year
In the first year, students are expected to:
- select educational activities amongst the common ones for a total of 28 ECTS credits
- take the mandatory courses for his/her area (24 ETCS)
- attend the requested seminar activities (8 CFU)
Second year
Mainly devoted to research
- Definition of the Research Project Proposal
- Supervised research activity
- Participation to selected Doctoral courses, Seminars or Summer Schools
- Possible research experience abroad
Students are expected to present the results of their work at International workshops and conferences and to submit papers for publication in international journals.
In the second Year students are also expected to take a Scientific English course for 5 ECTS
Third year
Mainly devoted to thesis preparation and publications
- Thesis development and completion
- Participation to selected Doctoral courses and Seminars
- Possible research experience abroad
Students are expected to present the results of their work at International workshops and conferences and to submit papers for publication in international journals.
