Learning Objectives

The course aims to provide basic knowledge both on cartographic representations and on the main themes and problems of human geography, particularly with regard to the interrelationships between environment, social phenomena, use of resources and planetary imbalances, highlighting the potential of geographical science for understanding the multifaceted contemporary reality, for the organization and desirable proper land management.

Il corso si propone di fornire agli studenti:

le basi teoriche e applicative di geografia al fine di acquisire una professionalità su questioni ambientali e territoriali e sui problemi della complessità socio-spaziale

i fondamenti teorici e le implicazioni pratiche di didattica della geografia e della cartografia.

The course aims to provide students with:

the theoretical and applicative bases of geography in order to acquire a professionalism on environmental and territorial issues and on the problems of socio-spatial complexity;

the theoretical foundations and the practical implications of teaching geography and cartography.

Program

The geographical bases. Geography: spirit, purpose, method. Man and the climate. The man and the waters. Man and the ground. Man and biological resources. Environment and sustainability, land, landscape and landscapes. Landscape: fundamental concept. Environmental and territorial planning.

Educational basis. Educational role of geography. Teaching and learning. Act with competence. Laboratory perspective and essential concepts for a geographic laboratory.

Cartographic bases. Data and statistics in the graph and mapping. Reading and interpretation of maps. Analysis and synthesis in the global interpretation. The laboratory as research.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

Acquisition of knowledge and skills suited to the teaching of human and physical geography:

- know and use concepts, methods and vocabulary of geography
- describe, interpret and communicate clearly issues of the contemporary world;
- know the objectives of geographical education and to program a curriculum based on education to the territory;

- know how to design lessons in geography with an active and laboratorial teaching.

KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:

-of the evolution of geographic thought;

-of the main lines of the epistemological debate of the discipline;

-of territorial problems and reality;

-of the interdisciplinarity of geography;

-of the human-environment system;

-of didactic tools (cartographic, iconographic, linguistic, literary, statistical, digital);

-the educational role of geography in the school system and programs.

APPLYING KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING:

-Knowledge and understanding of the concepts and theories provided by the course;

-direct and indirect observation capacity;

-knowledge and understanding of relationships and integration between facts and phenomena;

-ability to apply geographic / didactic methods and instruments;

-ability to apply acquired knowledge;

- knowledge and represent with different languages (multimedia, cartographic ...) the phenomena analyzed;

-relate knowledge and geographic methods with teaching-learning processes;

-acquire means and methods to teach the safeguard and respect for the environment and the civil cohabitation of human groups.

MAKING JUDGEMENTS:

-Ability to interpret the often hidden patterns and mechanisms of the system and the relationship between man and the environment;

-ability to find possible solutions to social challenges;

-ability to identify appropriate research methods in different contexts;

-ability to know and interpret problems at local and global scale (from local to global);

-ability to examine and interpret vertical / horizontal continuity / theme projects / projects;

-ability to design research hypotheses to deal with didactic cases.

COMMUNICATION SKILLS:

-Ability to communicate knowledge clearly, with argumentative coherence and with an appropriate and specific disciplinary language.

LEARNING SKILLS:

-Capacity to locate the sources of research resources independently;

-ability to criticize, elaborate and interpret the phenomena and situations that characterize the discipline;

-use and know how to link the study material;

-to handle the complexity of the relationships between environment-landscape-landscape;

-understand the complexity and resilience of the landscape; 

-ability to determine, verify and evaluate the effectiveness of certain didactic choices; 

-good autonomy in reading and using the study materials.
