Learning Objectives

The course is focused on the various forms of the geothermal energy, as renewable: electricity production, direct use and ground heat exchange (gothermal heat pumps).

Program

Definition of the geothermal energy. Introductory concepts and history of the geothermics in Italy. Volcanology, geothermics, heat flux and geothermal anomalies. Classification of the geothermal resources. Structure of the geothermal areas: the heat source, the reservoir, the cap rocks. The italian geothermal areas of Larderello, Travale and Radicondoli. Geothermal exploration: geological, geochemical, hydrogeological and geophysical methods of investigations. The alteration facies of rocks in geothermal areas. Vapour vs. water-dominant geothermal systems.Generation of electricity (open dry steam system and closed binary cycle ORC system). The levelized cost of energy (LCOE). Different uses of the geothermal resource. Direct use: hot water (district heating). Examples from the Po Plain and Emilia Romagna Region. Heating and cooling systems with Ground Coupled Heat Pumps (GCHP; closed and open loop systems). Thermal conductivity of the rocks, phases of installation of the geothermal probes, acceptance tests, the geothermal heat pump. The applicable law in the field of the installation of the ground coupled heat pumps. Regional geothermics: examples from high entalpy geothermal areas in Chile.

Bridging Courses

No bridging courses.

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

The student will aquire a critical knowledge on the whole spectrum of use of the geothermal energy, in particular for understanding, applying knowledge, making judgements, communication and learning skills.

Teaching Material

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Supporting Activities

Seminar activities and insights given by researchers of the University of Urbino or other universities or research centers will be provided.

Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment

Teaching

Lectures, practical activities on specific software, geological fieldtrip in selected italian geothermal areas.

Innovative teaching methods

Teaching will be implemented with practical activities, indoor or outside (geological fieldtrip).

Attendance

Attendance is suggested. The practical activities are also comprised for the final knowledge.

Course books

Files of the lessons given to the students and available at Moodle › blended.uniurb.it

Suggested textbooks:

Assessment

Oral examination is structured to improve the knowledge of the students concerning fundamental concepts, technical procedures, command of the specific language, appropriate claim on the issues and challenges. The oral examination is evaluated in thirtieths.
