Learning Objectives
The teaching of French Literature II provides, in the institutional part, a general overview of the literary and cultural trends in vogue in 17th-century France, as well as the most representative authors of the time. The monographic course, on the other hand, focuses on the activities and personalities of the early salons littéraires ('literary salons') and the current known as préciosité ('preciosité'), as well as the main literary fruits that can be traced back to it.

- French literature of the 17th century: historical context; literary, cultural and philosophical currents; most representative authors.
- The salons littéraires and the préciosité
- Molière's satire with Les Précieuses ridicules: introduction, reading and commentary
- Madame de Lafayette and 'psychological preciosité': La Princesse de Clèves, with introduction, reading and commentary
- The aphorism and the apologue: La Rochefoucauld, Maximes and La Fontaine, Fables (with reading and commentary on excerpts)
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
Knowledge and understanding skills. Students will acquire the basic methodological tools to investigate and understand the main junctures of seventeenth-century French literature.
Applied knowledge and understanding skills. The student will be able to put basic knowledge and skills to use in appropriately analyzing specific case studies pertaining to seventeenth-century French literature, demonstrating skills in literary-historical contextualization and understanding of proposed texts.
Autonomy of judgment. Students will demonstrate the ability to navigate the seventeenth-century French literary landscape, formulating evaluations, hypotheses and interpretations about authors and literary texts, as well as the contexts of the emergence of the works examined, for both the institutional and monographic portions of the course.
Communication Skills. Students will possess adequate language property and the ability to employ the specialized vocabulary of the discipline in a relevant manner in order to correctly report information and solutions related to the case studies examined.
Ability to learn. The student will be able to progress independently in the study of seventeenth-century French literature and to apply the knowledge and skills acquired to other texts and periods of French literature, gradually achieving the necessary preparation to continue their studies in the master's degree.

Lectures in Italian and French, enriched by interventions by students and discussions animated by the lecturer.

Second-year students (French Literature II) are required to study:
- Michela Landi (a c. di), Letteratura francese. Dalle origini al Settecento, Firenze, Le Monnier Università, 2021 (capp. Seicento e Settecento: details of the parts to be studied will be indicated at the beginning of the course).
NB: For French Literature III students who have already taken the French Literature II exam in A.Y. 2022/23, appropriate substitute bibliographical indications will be provided.
Unabridged reading of (editions listed are to be considered indicative) is also required:
- Madame de Lafayette, La Princesse de Clèves, édition de Bernard Pingaud, Paris, Gallimard, 2020 (collection Folio Classiques, n° 3381).
- Molière, Les Précieuses ridicules, édition de Jacques Chupeau, Paris, Gallimard, 2022 (collection Folio Théâtre, n° 45).
To these texts will be added the reading of:
- La Rochefoucauld, Maximes et Refléxions diverses, édition de Jean Lafond, Paris, Gallimard, 2021 (collection Folio Classiques, n° 728). [excerpts selected and uploaded to Moodle].
- Jean de la Fontaine, Fables, édition de Jean-Pierre Collinet, Paris, Gallimard, 2015 (collection Folio Classiques, n° 2246). [fables selected and uploaded to Moodle].
A handout of critical essays to be studied for the exam will be made available to/students on Moodle during the course.
- Assessment
Oral test, conducted partially in French. The final grade will take into account any participation of the student(s) in activities proposed by the teacher (classe inversée, travaux pratiques, exposés). The evaluation is expressed in thirtieths and aims to ascertain the degree of depth in the knowledge of the subject, the reasoning and argumentative skills as well as the possession and appropriate use of specialized vocabulary by the candidate(s). Based on these criteria, the tests may be considered excellent (28-30/30, with possible award of honors), good (25-27/30), fair (22-24/30) or sufficient (18-21/30). On the other hand, evidence that is seriously deficient in basic knowledge, expository skills and use of appropriate vocabulary will be considered insufficient.
