Learning Objectives
Seismic microzonation studies aim to evaluate the potential alteration of seismic shaking on the surface, providing necessary information for territorial planning, design, emergency planning, and post-earthquake reconstruction. The course addresses the main topics related to the evaluation of the basic seismic hazard for the Italian territory, site effects and seismic amplification, the critical issues due to liquefaction phenomena, earthquake-induced landslides, and the presence of active and capable faults within the Seismic Microzonation Studies. The course will initially cover the basic principles of seismology and the concepts of vulnerability, hazard, exposure, and seismic risk. It will continue with a review of the main historical - bibliographic, geological - technical surveys and a review of the main geognostic surveys used in MZS studies. It will proceed with the discussion of the main normative sources and the national reference standards for MZS studies in the three levels of detail provided. The course will be completed with practical exercises in the use of available databases, GIS software, and the main applications available to achieve a complete seismic microzonation study.
Program
Basic principles of seismology, seismic amplification, resonance frequency
Vulnerability, hazard, exposure, and seismic risk
Historical and bibliographic surveys through national portals
Main geognostic surveys in MZS studies
Local seismic amplification phenomena
Co- and post-seismic effects: slope stability analysis under seismic conditions, liquefaction risk assessment
Normative and national reference standards in MZS studies
Level 1 and 2 seismic microzonation: databases, representation standards and cartography, content of the illustrative report
Level 3 seismic microzonation: seismogenic sources, seismic hazard disaggregation, natural accelerograms in local seismic response studies. Examples of numerical models of local seismic response in one-dimensional and two-dimensional conditions
Use of applications for mapping and archiving surveys (GIS, Soft MS, MzS tool)
Consultation and critical analysis of MZS studies at levels 1, 2, and 3 available in national and regional portals
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
Knowledge and Understanding Skills: The student must achieve sufficient mastery of the theoretical and practical knowledge necessary for the critical analysis and execution of an MZS study.
Ability to Apply Knowledge and Understanding: The student must demonstrate the ability to apply the concepts and theories covered during the course to conduct an MZS study.
Judgment Autonomy: The student must be able to tackle the complexity of an interdisciplinary approach to the problem, assessing and resolving the various issues in the execution of an MZS study.
Communication Skills: The student must show the ability to clearly describe the acquired knowledge with scientific rigor and proper language use.
Learning Ability: The student must demonstrate the ability to develop a path of individual growth and critical re-elaboration.
