Learning Objectives
The course aims to provide students with an overview of vaccination as a cornerstone in the fight against infectious diseases. Special focus will be given to the development of innovative vaccine strategies, with particular emphasis on carbohydrate-based vaccines as promising tools to address antimicrobial resistance and emerging bacterial threats.
Program
Introduction to vaccination principles: historical perspective, immune mechanisms, and public health impact.
Challenges in vaccine development against bacterial pathogens.
Overview of innovative vaccine strategies, including structure-based vaccine design, nucleic acid vaccines, and nanoparticle-based platforms.
Focus on carbohydrate-based vaccines: rationale, design, and examples of licensed and investigational products.
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
Knowledge and understanding of vaccination principles and modern vaccine technologies.
Ability to critically evaluate the advantages and limitations of innovative vaccine strategies.
Application of acquired knowledge to propose vaccine-based solutions to antimicrobial resistance.
Development of communication skills to explain complex immunological concepts in the context of public health interventions.
