Learning Objectives
The course aims to provide, from a psychophysiological perspective, an overview of the adaptive functions of emotional processes—both in relation to the organization of responses to motivationally relevant environmental stimuli and to their role in the interaction with cognitive processes. Specifically, after an introduction to the distinctive features and methods used in Psychophysiology to investigate the mind-body relationship, the functional significance of the main physiological response patterns characterizing emotional reactions will be addressed. Subsequently, drawing on recent psychophysiological and neuroscientific literature, the course will examine the role of emotions in: a) decision-making under uncertainty and in response to moral dilemmas; b) memory activation and consolidation processes occurring during REM sleep; c) food choice and consumption. These are three highly topical areas of research in which the potential psychopathological implications of dysfunctional emotional responses can be explored.
Program
Characteristics and methods of Psychophysiology: the mind–body relationship considered from a whole-body perspective, not limited to the brain.
Stimulus-specific responses and environmental adaptation: as the basis of complex emotional processes.
Psychophysiology of emotions: beyond everyday conceptions of emotions.
Emotions and decision-making: interaction between cognitive and emotional processes in decision-making under uncertainty and in moral dilemmas.
Emotions and sleep: a bidirectional relationship with implications for memory processes.
Emotions and food: the construction of food flavor and its relationship with emotional processes.
Teaching Material
The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it
