Learning Objectives

The master's degree course is aimed at training specialists who have a solid basic and applied scientific preparation in the biomolecular, bio-health fields, taking into account the requirements for access to the profession of Biologist. In particular, the course is aimed at training professionals:

a)  experts in fields related to basic and applied research activity

b)  it is also aimed at transmitting useful information to independently deal with cytometric diagnostics and provide general information on the possibilities and limits of the method.

Program

All topics uploaded to blended:

  • Flow cytometry: theoretical basis of the technique and instrumentation. The Fluidics component
  • The basis of optics in flow cytometry
  • Configuration and interrogation point of the event
  • Flow cytometry: The optical component and The electronic component
  • Cell separation in flow cytometry: methods in fluidics and microfluidics
  • Introduction to individual work: VACS microfluidic sorter
  • Scattering in flow cytometry
  • Sample preparation for flow cytometric analysis
  • Stemness and differentiation
  • Hematopoietic niche
  • Antibodies and Immunofluorescence
  • Representation of the flow cytometric signal
  • Fluorescence and Probes
  • Immunophenotyping for flow cytometry
  • exercises: examples of gating strategies for diagnostics
  • exercises: analysis via repositories (and dedicated software)

Bridging Courses

none

Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)

Knowledge and understanding. The student must demonstrate knowledge of the topics indicated in the program, and the ability to understand the relationships between the various pieces of information pertaining to them.

Applied knowledge and understanding. The student must demonstrate the ability to interpret the data in his/her possession in order to arrive at the framework of the diagnostic problem.

Autonomy of judgment. The student must demonstrate the ability to process the data in his/her possession in order to independently arrive at a motivated solution to the problem

Communication skills. The student must be able to communicate clearly and consequentially

Ability to learn. The student must demonstrate the ability to coordinate the information received progressively during the course, inserting it consequentially and logically into the general scheme of the discipline.

Teaching Material

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Supporting Activities

Students who have registered their disability certification or DSA certification at the Inclusion and Right to Education Office can ask to use specific supports during the exam.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, weeks before the exam session, to the course teacher, who will verify their consistency with the indications of the university guidelines and may request their modification.

The seminars conducted in the previous academic year will no longer be available.

Teaching, Attendance, Course Books and Assessment

Teaching

Frontal lessons and practical exercises on the computer (freeware online software) with simulated diagnoses of exemplary cases deposited publicly and validated by authoritative scientific publications.

The teaching material prepared by the teacher in addition to exercise guides and material useful for innovative teaching, as well as the communications of the teacher specific to the teaching (FORUM) are available within the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Attendance

Attendance at lectures is NOT mandatory but strongly recommended given the complexity of the subject

There are no prerequisites (no bridging courses)

Course books

RECOMMENDED book, but not MANDATORY  is

"Flow Cytometry" Ortolani et al. Ed. Edi Ermes

Assessment

The final exam consists of a WRITTEN TEST on ALL the topics covered in the course to verify the level of knowledge achieved by the student in relation to the previously indicated educational objectives. The answers are judged on the basis of the knowledge of the subject, the ability to present and the language used as correct and appropriate scientific terminology, and are used to evaluate the ability to reason and synthesize.

The written test lasts 1 hour, contains 16-18 questions

The evaluation criteria and scores of the written exam are determined in scores that contribute to the final grade in thirtieths, according to the following attribution:

- multiple choice questions, up to 1.5 points

- questions with T/F answer, up to 3 points

- other types of questions, (for completion, discussion of diagrams and interpretations of data representations) up to 3 points.

With a grade of 30 cum laude, the candidate fully achieves the learning outcomes expected under the points “knowledge and understanding”; “applied knowledge and understanding”; “autonomy of judgment”; “communication skills” and “ability to learn”.

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
