The course is finalized in acquiring the necessary skills of the English language B1 level,  according to the criteria of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR), with a particular emphasis on scientific language. 

The course proposes to offer the students the linguistic skills and knowledge of the terminology useful for understanding, translating, reading and discussing authentic texts in psychology. During the lessons the students are encouraged to participate in the various interactive activities.

Weekly lesson program:

Tuesday 08:00 - 11:00 am  –  Theory and practice of  text comprehension with grammar study.

Friday 16.00 – 18.00 – Theory and practice of orality –  Reading, listening and speaking (with the collaboration of Professor Patricia Barzotti).  

It is assumed that students are already prepared with an understanding of the English language at level A2 (CEFR)

In relation to the English language the student must prove to have acquired:

Knowledge and understanding: The objectives of the course is to acquire the necessary lexical and morphosyntactic skills necessary for the comprehension and interpretation of authentic texts of psychology.

Applying knowledge and understanding: These texts will be analyzed from both a linguistic and cultural perspective in order to allow the student to familiarize themselves with the various topics and concepts from the field of psychology.  

Making Judgments: Students will be encouraged to express themselves and discuss their thoughts on the topics introduced. 

Communication skills: Students must have the ability to efficiently express and communicate their knowledge of the basic concepts of psychology in English. 

Learning Skills -  The students are expected to be able to use the knowledge and concepts learned in order to reason and hold discussions on  psychology.

The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

Support lessons will be made available by the linguistic expert Professor Patrizia Barzotti. The day and time will be communicated at the beginning of the lessons.

Assessment

Written and Oral

• Both the written and oral parts of the exam are obligatory.

• The written exam (a partial mark, only held on the first date of exams) is divided into two parts, listening (about ½ an hour) where the student will hear a text read on a topic of psychology and must answer comprehension questions either multiple choice or true/false.  

• The student must pass the written test in order to take the oral that can be taken in the same session as the written exam or in one of the following two exam session of that academic year. 

• There are two possible dates within the exam session to take the oral test. 

 For the Oral exam the student must be able to:

i)   read out loud and correctly a part of a  text chosen from the study material.

ii)  hold a discussion about the contents of a chosen text.

iii)  answer questions about aspects of grammar from a chosen text. 

• The written and oral will be held on different dates.

• All study materials can be found on the Blended learning platform for the course. 

• It is necessary for students to register for both exams separately on the Esse3 platform. 

 

The Assessment Criteria for grades are on a scale of 30 (the final grade is an average of the written and oral exams)

- less than 18: the level of competence is not sufficient. No score is given for the results of knowledge understanding.

- 18 – 20:  the level of competence is sufficient. The student has achieved the minimum results required for knowledge and understanding.

- 21- 23: the level of competence is fully sufficient. The student has achieved the required results for knowledge and understanding and applying knowledge and understanding.

- 24 – 26: the level of competence is good: the student has achieved the required results for knowledge and understanding, applying knowledge and understanding and making judgments.

- 27 -29: the level of competence is very good level. The student has achieved the required results for knowledge and understanding and applying knowledge and understanding,  making judgments and  Learning Skills .

- 30 – 30 cum laude: the level of competence is excellent. The student has fully achieved the required results for knowledge and understanding and applying knowledge and understanding, making judgments and  learning skills .

Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)

Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.

To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.

Teaching

The program and study materials are the same for attending students. The non-attending students must refer to the platform Moodle/Blended Learning for the exam study material.
