2025/2026 LMR/02 - Classe delle lauree magistrali ciclo unico in Conservazione e Restauro dei Beni Culturali Urbino

Learning Objectives

The Master’s Degree Program in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage (Single-Cycle) is the result of the University’s long-standing expertise in the field. Since 2001, the University has offered undergraduate and specialized programs in cultural heritage conservation and restoration. This new academic pathway, in line with the Italian Cultural Heritage Code, Ministerial Decree 87/2009, and international ECCO-ENCORE standards, features a strong practical component (approximately 50%) and is developed in collaboration with local public and private institutions such as Superintendencies, Museums, Local Authorities, and Foundations.

Structured over five years, the program leads to a professional qualification as a Restorer and focuses on Professional Profile PFP2, which pertains to wooden, textile, and contemporary artifacts.

The program aims to train highly qualified professionals capable of performing advanced-level conservation and restoration work on cultural heritage. Students gain in-depth knowledge of modern documentation techniques, material degradation processes, applied diagnostics, and the management of conservation environments. The curriculum also provides a strong theoretical foundation in archaeology, art history, restoration history and methodology, encouraging an interdisciplinary and critical approach.

The course combines classroom teaching with hands-on training. The theoretical instruction covers both scientific and humanistic disciplines, while the practical component takes place in the University’s specialized laboratories and documentation centers, as well as through partnerships with external institutions (museums, superintendencies, and foundations).

Admission to the program is limited to 10 places per year and requires passing an entrance examination.

Conservation and Restauration of Cultural Heritage (LMR/02)

The program qualifies graduates for the regulated profession of Restorer of Cultural Heritage and prepares professionals capable of taking on roles involving oversight, management, and research in the fields of conservation, restoration, and the enhancement of cultural heritage.

Career opportunities may include positions within:

  • Public and private companies and organizations operating in the conservation, restoration, and protection of cultural heritage;
  • Institutions under the Ministry of Culture responsible for heritage protection (such as Superintendencies, Museums, Libraries, Archives, etc.);
  • The National PhD Program in Heritage Science and other doctoral programs focused on cultural heritage.

The program is designed to provide students with a solid theoretical foundation along with all the technical knowledge required for restoration work across the various classes of artifacts covered by the curriculum. Technical skills are developed directly through hands-on experience in diagnostic and digital documentation laboratories.

Practical and laboratory skills are acquired through 100 ECTS credits of mandatory laboratory activities, in addition to 15 ECTS credits for the final project. These activities take place in the University’s restoration laboratories and on external worksites, in collaboration with partner companies.

In accordance with Ministerial Decree No. 87 of May 26, 2009, the final examination consists of two components:

  1. Component 1 (Qualifying Examination) – This is a practical, hands-on assessment carried out during the final year of the program. It involves a laboratory-based project, which may be derived from activities undertaken during the five-year course of study. The project must be presented with a final technical report, prepared under the supervision of one or more certified restoration instructors.
  2. Component 2 (Thesis) – This is a theoretical and methodological dissertation, based on a written thesis to be discussed before a panel of three advisors. One of the advisors will be designated as the primary supervisor. The thesis will be an interdisciplinary project integrating historical-artistic, technical-scientific, and practical-laboratory perspectives.

Written theses may be submitted in another language, subject to approval by the advisory panel.

The final examination may be awarded a score ranging from 0 to 8 points.
