Learning Objectives
1- The educational targets of section 1.4 are those to provide the students with:
The basic theoretical and practical knowledge to analyze the state of conservation and the causes of degradation of the preparatory layers and the pictorial film of wooden artefacts.
-Knowledge of traditional and innovative materials and methods to be used for securing and consolidating preparatory and pictorial layers.
-Knowledge of traditional materials and methods (stucco based on calcium sulphate and animal glue) for performing stucco on polychrome wooden artefacts.
-Basic knowledge of the theory of color and "recognizable" retouching developed by the ICR and the Opificio delle Pietre Dure.
-Knowledge of traditional and innovative materials and techniques for the finishing treatment of exposed wood and the paint film in wooden artefacts.
Program
1- Frontal lessons (20 hours)
1.01- PREPARATORY LAYERS AND PAINTING FILM Constituent materials: fillers, binders and causes of degradation
1.02 - NATURAL AND SYNTHETIC CONSOLIDANTS AND ADHESIVES. -Common characteristics, differences and use of Consolidants, Adhesives and Fixatives. -The use of natural and synthetic consolidants and adhesives. Their properties, modes of use and application. - Criteria for choosing suitable consolidants and adhesives.
1.03-THE GAP Gaps in volume and polychromy in polychrome wooden artefacts. -Traditional grouting of polychrome gaps
1.04–THE PICTORIAL RESTORATION Brief history of pictorial restoration in Italy. The experiences of the ICR and the OPD. Scientific criteria and methods to be used to identify materials and methods to be used in integrations.
1.05-FINISHING AND PROTECTIVE TREATMENTS Dyes, resins, waxes. The paints.
2- Laboratory actvities (105 hours)
To be carried out on works present in the laboratory and on models.
-Preparation of fixatives and consolidants in variable percentages and practical exercise.
- Performing traditional grouting and practicing recognizable retouching methods on models
-Exercise in applying final treatments..
Learning Achievements (Dublin Descriptors)
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
At the end of the section the student must have acquired the theoretical knowledge essential for the recognition of the materials and executive techniques of preparatory and pictorial layers applied on a wooden artefact and the causes of their degradation. They must be able to correctly perform grouting using traditional techniques and materials and must be able to break down different color shades into pure colours.
APPLIED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY TO UNDERSTAND
The student must also be able to identify, based on theoretical knowledge, materials and techniques for the consolidation and fixing operations of preparatory layers and pictorial film of a wooden artefact and traditional or innovative materials and techniques for finishing natural and polychrome wooden artefacts.
INDEPENDENCE OF JUDGMENT
At the end of the section, the student must be able to identify and propose appropriate materials and techniques for intervention on preparatory layers and degraded polychromies. The student must demonstrate the ability to process, according to his/her own judgement, all the theoretical information and practical experience acquired during the section.
COMMUNICATION SKILL
At the end of the section the student must be able to communicate in a clear and motivated way his opinion regarding the state of conservation and the type of conservative intervention to be carried out on the different types of polychromy present on a wooden artefact.
ABILITY TO LEARN
The student must demonstrate that they have been able to learn and process in a personal and autonomous manner the theoretical information received from the teacher and that they have acquired, through practical experience, the manual skills necessary to correctly carry out consolidation and fixing interventions on a degraded pictorial film, recognizable retouching and the application of a suitable protective film.
Teaching Material
The teaching material prepared by the lecturer in addition to recommended textbooks (such as for instance slides, lecture notes, exercises, bibliography) and communications from the lecturer specific to the course can be found inside the Moodle platform › blended.uniurb.it

- Assessment
At the end of the section the student will be evaluated based on:
-Practical aptitudes demonstrated during laboratory exercises
-Presentation of a written report relating to the laboratory activities carried out during the section. The report must reach the teacher one week before the exam date.
-Oral test on topics covered during the lectures and/or on study texts indicated in the bibliography.
- Disability and Specific Learning Disorders (SLD)
Students who have registered their disability certification or SLD certification with the Inclusion and Right to Study Office can request to use conceptual maps (for keywords) during exams.
To this end, it is necessary to send the maps, two weeks before the exam date, to the course instructor, who will verify their compliance with the university guidelines and may request modifications.
